Hello everyone, and welcome to the wonderful world of Athena!
Athena Magazine was started in 2008 by Naomi Hyba, Michelle Olding and Hannah Jackson, three high school students who, along with so many other young women, were sick and tired of the ridiculous messages they were constantly receiving from the media. Young women are told that our worth is dependent on our attractiveness; the size of our jeans and width of our waistlines.
But we know dozens upon dozens upon dozens of smart, savvy, confident, compassionate, funny, fearless, talented, kind and generous young women. These fantastic people deserve to be recognized for their skills and their achievements, not because of their makeup techniques or their hairstyles.
So we distributed Athena magazine in Ottawa, ON-area schools, libraries and community centres, trying to let young women know that their contributions are valued, and that their voices deserve to be heard.
This year, with an expanded group of volunteer journalists and contributors, Athena is ready to release an amazing second issue.
